FAQs

What is the Scouts of the World Award?

I think you must have missed our dedicated What is SOWA? page.

Will meals be provided?

In an effort to keep costs minimal, and make logistics easier, we will not be providing meals centrally throughout the weekend. As the menu shows, we are planning on a group trip to the local 'Spoons on the Saturday evening for dinner. You should be able to eat before arriving on the Friday evening, and after departing for Sunday lunch. This means you just need to bring some cereal bars or porridge pots, etc., for the two breakfasts, and a sandwhich or similar for the Saturday lunch (or pop to the local shops).

What if I cannot arrive in time on the Friday? Or need to leave early on the Sunday?

We can accomodate later arrivals and early departures if we know about this in advance. The core content will begin on the Saturday morning, and the Friday evening programme is designed more as an icebreaker and is adaptable such that it can be flexed onto the Saturday morning too. Saying this, if possible, please aim to arrive in time for the Friday evening's content. If not, please try to ensure you are there by 9am on the Saturday. Please contact us if you will not be able to make it for the full weekend, and let us know when you will be arriving and/or departing.

I'm not a Scout, can I attend & acheive the award?

As long as you are happy being added (temporarily at least) onto the Scouts Membership System, you can attend and achieve the award. This includes SSAGO members who are members of neither the Scouts or Girlguiding, and also those that are solely a member of Girlguiding.

Are non-SSAGO members going to be there too?

This SOWA Discovery is being facilitated just for SSAGO members. There will be non-SSAGO members there to deliver the weekend, however it should only be SSAGO members participating in it. Similar exclusive SOWA Discovery events were ran in the past year for those attend the World Scout Moot too.

Who is running the weekend?

The event is being organised by the SSAGO Top Awards Project - led by Tim Rodaway. Alongside being Project Lead, Tim is also a SOWA Mentor, SOWA Trainer and SOWA Sub Team Leader for the North East. We are also working closely with Chris Worthington - UK SOWA Lead Volunteer.

The weekend itself will be delivered by a team of SOWA Trainers (and potentially some SOWA Mentors) from across the country.

What are the accomodation options for the weekend?

We will be offering floor space inside for sleeping on - please bring a roll mat and sleeping bag!
